General Information
Project Description
The exhibition “Qatar Between Land and Sea. Through Arts and Heritage" is the central project of the cultural program of the State of Qatar, the guest country at the 24th St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.
After being invited by the Creative agency, the a.dpt team took part and won the closed competition for the creative concept of the exhibition. The design concept was highly appreciated by the Ambassador of Qatar.
The official reception of State of Qatar was held at the same time and was also designed by a.dpt team.
The exhibition is based on a story about Qatari history and culture,
Presenting around 200 objects spanning over a hundred years and ranging the features and size, which absorb the craftsmen's creative energies as a result of their cross-cultural dialogue and mutual inspiration. Artefacts were kindly provided by the National Museum of Qatar, Sheikh Faisal bin Qassim Al Thani Museum and Mathaf: Museum of Modern Art.
The concept is based on the Qatar territorial proximity to the desert and the sea, which had a significant impact on the formation of the cultural tradition and historical heritage: the people of Qatar are not exclusively Bedouin or coastal, which distinguishes them from the inhabitants of neighboring countries.
The design made by architects Murat Guketlov, Ksenia Karavaeva and Lana Gerasimova is full of symbolism. The main element of the exhibition architecture is the fabric over the central part of the hall, which symbolizes the unity of the sea and the desert - the embodiment of the Qatari flag.
The fabric dunes recede, revealing archaic volumes inspired by traditional Qatari architecture that create dominant points and structure the display.
The highest volume - a black matte truncated cone hides inside one of the main treasures and assets of Qatar - pearls. Once inside, the viewer will be able to feel solitude in pitch darkness, where through the water column only a ray of light makes its way to the pearl. The volume symbolizes the transition from the historical folk craft (pearl mining) to the boom of the oil industry.
The central architectural volume is the Majlis - an important place in every Qatari home, where it is customary to get together, communicate and feel the atmosphere of invariable hospitality. The volumetric adobe walls enclose the chamber space. The interior is decorated with original national handmade fabrics – the Sadu.
The final architectural volume has the shape of a vessel. It is an inverted cone covered with a modern interpretation of a traditional pattern that contains feminine jewelry.
The Marble Hall of the Ethnographic Museum organically took over the architecture and design of the exhibition. We aimed to emphasize the beauty and scale of the hall: the existing bas-reliefs located on the perimeter of the ground floor were highlighted while being hidden behind the blurring canvas wall, expanding the space and creating the feeling of mystery.
